Scholarship & Bursary Information

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, participation in school activities, community involvement, financial need, post-secondary/career plans or a combination the above. Students should consult Student Services about their eligibility and to obtain application forms before deadline dates.

ALANNA HEFFEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP:  ($300)
This award is available to a grade-twelve R.F. Staples student based on their display of humanitarian efforts and ability to demonstrate concern for others in their school and community.

ALBERT MILLER AGRICULTURAL SCHOLARSHIP:  ($1000)
This award is available to An R.F. Staples student entering post secondary agricultural studies.  Preference will be given to those entering the agricultural/technician/heavy duty technician faculty.  Financial need will be considered.

ALBERTA TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP: (WESTLOCK LOCAL, 2 @ $1000)
This award is awarded to students from R. F. Staples who are entering a Faculty of Education and/or furthering their education in any post-secondary institution.

ARISTA HAAS SCHOLARSHIP:  ($1000)
This award is awarded to a grade-twelve student furthering their education in any post-secondary institution.

BIGGEMAN SCHOLARSHIP:  ($200)
Awarded to a grade-twelve student entering any post-secondary institution who qualifies for financial assistance.

CAMPUS LIFE SCHOLARSHIP: ($500)
This scholarship is awarded to a grade-twelve student furthering their education in any post-secondary institution.  Recipient selection will be based upon community involvement as well as school involvement.  The recipient must be or have been involved in Campus Life.

CANADIAN PARENTS FOR FRENCH SCHOLARSHIP:  ($300)
Awarded to a student beginning post-secondary French studies.

CROPMAXX INC. AGRICULTURAL SCHOLARSHIP:  ($500)
This scholarship is available to a rural R.F. Staples student entering post secondary in agricultural studies, who has shown sincere interest in: agriculture, academics, school and community participation, and shows a positive relationship with others.

DAVE CROSS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (Westlock Seed Cleaning Co-op Ltd) ($750)
Awarded to students entering post-secondary agricultural studies based on academic achievement , extra-curricular activities or contribution to community and financial need.

EACH ONE TEACH ONE LITERACY SOCIETY BURSARY (2 @ $500)
Awarded to a student entering post-secondary studies who demonstrates hard work and diligence who has overcome obstacles along the way. Students must also demonstrate contributions to their community.

ELKS CLUB OF WESTLOCK SCHOLARSHIP:  (2 @ $1000)
Awarded to students entering post-secondary studies based on academic achievement and financial need.

FAWCETT PACO (Progressive and Coordinating Organization) AGRICULTURAL SCHOLARSHIP: ($500)
Awarded to a rural R.F. Staples student entering post secondary agricultural studies, who has shown sincere interest in: agriculture, academics, school and community participation, and shows a positive relationship with others.

HENNY DOBYANSKI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: ($500)
This award is available to a grade 12 R.F. Staples student furthering their education in any post-secondary institution.  This is a non-academic scholarship, meaning the criteria is not based upon academic achievement.  This student is expected to highlight their strategies displaying perseverance and willingness to move forward while experiencing  challenges/hardships/adversity whether physical and/or emotional.  This scholarship will be presented annually, up to and including year 2017.

JOHN’S JEWELERS/STEPHANIE STERLING ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP:  ($1000)
Awarded to a female entering a post-secondary engineering program, based on academic achievement.

LENNON AND BARLOW SCHOLARSHIP:  ($1000)
Awarded to a student entering post-secondary studies based on the following criteria:

  • Financial need
  • Contribution and/or participation in extra-curricular and community activities
  • Academic performance

LENORE HUTCHISON MEMORIAL CTS SCHOLARSHIP: ($250)
The Lenore Hutchison Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a R.F. Staples student entering a post secondary institution or an apprenticeship program based on the following criteria:

  • The recipient must demonstrate excellent citizenship in his/her relationship with staff and fellow students.
  • The recipient must be reliable and willing to go that “extra mile” in completing the requirements of the program.
  • The recipient must demonstrate commitment in reaching the goals of the program-not necessarily the student with the highest marks in the course.
  • The student may choose to pursue a career in any of the following CTS disciplines: automotives (mechanics), cosmetology (hair stylist), building construction (carpentry), foods (culinary arts), communication technology (photography), or information processing (computers).

MERIT CONTRACTORS ASSOCIATION AWARD:  ($300)
This is a construction based award.  The recipient of this award must be in the CTS building construction stream and will be selected by the building construction teacher, thus does not require an application.

PEMBINA HILLS CITIZENSHIP AWARD:  ($1000)
This scholarship is available to an R. F. Staples student entering a post secondary institution or an apprenticeship program:

  • Has demonstrated concern for school, community and people through active involvement in local or regional “structures” (e.g. Student’s Union, 4-H, School, or Community Committees, etc)
  • Active history of volunteerism
  • Proven ability to learn from errors and to positively accept consequences for actions
  • Proven history of actively and positively seeking solutions to problems and issues
  • Maintain an overall academic standard of at least 70% in the four core academic courses.

PIBROCH AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP:  ($500)
Awarded to a rural R. F. Staples’ student beginning post-secondary agriculture studies, who has shown sincere interest in agriculture, academics, and school related and community participation and has positive relationships with others.

R. F. STAPLES STAFF SCHOLARSHIP:  ($500)
Awarded to a student entering post-secondary studies based on academic and extra-curricular achievements.

RAINBOW PASTORAL SCHOLARSHIP (2 @ $500)
Awarded to a student entering post-secondary studies based on academic and extra-curricular achievements.

ROLLINGS BURSARY: ($500)
Awarded to a R. F. Staples female graduate entering the post-secondary study, preferably, but not necessarily, in engineering, pharmacy, or agriculture, whose registration is confirmed by September the year of application.  The student must not be a recipient of any other major award (excluding the Rutherford Scholarship) and have the highest marks in at least two science subjects of any other application.

SHOEMAKER, VINEY, AND FRIESEN SCHOLARSHIP:  ($1000)
Awarded to a student entering post secondary studies in the field of accounting or finance, based on academic achievement and financial need.  Other fields of post secondary studies will be considered based upon stated criteria.

WESTLOCK COMMUNITY ART CLUB SCHOLARSHIP:  ($300)
Awarded to a student from R. F. Staples Secondary School or St. Mary Senior entering post-secondary study in the Visual Arts field.

WESTLOCK DRAMA SOCIETY (Alan R. Doherty Memorial) SCHOLARSHIP: ($1000)
Awarded to a student entering post-secondary study in drama or fine arts, with drama taking preference. If there is not an applicant entering studies in drama, then a student entering studies in fine arts will qualify (e.g. music).

WESTLOCK FIRE AND RESCUE SCHOLARSHIP: ($500)
Awarded to a graduate seeking a career as a medical, fire or rescue first responder.  Consideration will also be given to an individual seeking a career in the medical field either as a volunteer or permanent.  (Emergency Medical Responder, Nurse, Nurse’s Aid, Doctor as examples.)

WESTLOCK NURSES’ CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP: ($500)
Awarded to a student entering the degree or diploma in a nursing program.

WESTLOCK ROTARY CLUB (Fred Morie Memorial) SCHOLARSHIP: ($500)
This scholarship is available to a R.F. Staples student pursuing post secondary study with the goal or intent on owning his or her own business (or obtain a self employed professional standing).  This student must demonstrate concern for school, community and people through active involvement in local, regional or national groups.  This scholarship is based on volunteer work in the community and financial need.

WESTLOCK ROTARY CLUB (Jean Duteau Memorial) SCHOLARSHIP: ($500)
Awarded to a student from R.F. Staples School or St. Mary School going onto any facet of the Fine Arts. The criteria in awarding the scholarship are as follows:

  1. Senior Grade 12 student must be going on to secondary education
  2. Candidate must be advancing into any facet of the Fine Arts, example (dancing, music, or drama)
  3. Candidate must have a positive attitude towards life, community and peers.
  4. Candidate should have participated in extra-curricular activities in school and community.
  5. Candidate should have a good academic performance.

RUTHERFORD SCHOLARSHIPS: (up to $2500)
Awarded to students beginning post-secondary studies in any area based on academic achievement in any one or all grade 10, 11, and 12.  Eligibility criteria include:

Grade 10

  • Average 75% or higher in five subjects:
    • English 10 or 13
    • Two of the following
      • Social Studies 10
      • Mathematics 10
      • A language other than English at the Grade-10 level
      • Science 10
      • Any other additional subjects at the Grade-10 level including the above subjects combined introductory courses.

Grade 11

  • Average 75% or higher in five subjects:
    • English 20, 23, or Literature/Communications 21
    • Two of the following:
      • Social studies 20
      • Mathematics 20
      • Chemistry 20
      • Physics 20
      • Biology 20
      • A language other than English at the Grade-11 level
      • Any other two other additional subjects at the Grade-11 level including the above subjects and combined intermediate courses.

Grade 12

  • Average 75% or higher in five subjects:
    • English 30
    • Four of the following
      • Social studies 30
      • Mathematics 30
      • Mathematics 31
      • Chemistry 30
      • Physics 30
      • Biology 30
      • A language other than English at the Grade-12 level
      • Any two other five-credit courses at the Grade 12 level including those listed above and combined advanced C.T.S. courses.

Important Note:  All Rutherford applicants must provide their Social Insurance Number.
